The First Translation from Russian Literature Does Not Come from 1836 (Facts Which Have Not Entered a Brief History 2)

Soňa Lesňáková

The study corrects and specifies author's already published data on beginnings of translation from the Russian literature at the territory of today's Slovakia. According to her latest findings first translation on this territory does not date to 1836 (as it was presumed and taken for granted from 1970) but to the first decade of the 19th century, when Samuel Rožnay (1787-1815) translated in verse "Slovo o pluku Igorovom" into Biblical Czech. This fact is confirmed by Václav Hanka in the introduction to his own translation of this epic, published in Prague in 1821. Rožnay's translation was never published and its manuscript disappeared. It existence is confirmed by quotations from correspondence of contemporary Slavonic scholars (B. Kopitar, J. Dobrovský) including J. Muller - translator of "Slovo" into German, as well by the fragments of Rožnay's translation of "Slovo o pluku Igorovom" into German published posthumously in the Morgenblatt newspaper (Tübingen 1817, 1818). Against all odds "Slovo o pluku Igorovom" got into the hands of the Slovak reader. Its fragments, in the translation of V. Hanka were published as a three part series by J. Palkovič in his calendar "Větší a zvláštnejší nový i starý kalendár na rok 1825, 1826 a 1827". This fact, of special importance from the point of view of historiography, has been so far ignored by Slovak Russian as well as bibliographic studies.

Comparative Studies - Authority - Translation

Bogumiła Suwara

The interpretation of the "multiple encounters" of the Slovak literature with the texts of Polish Romantics has demonstrated a higher degree of the "semantic adaptation" of texts in the initial stage of the contacts. This fact has confirmed the occurrence of the immediate, lively reaction to the so-called "awaited" texts. It has also confirmed the reception of Polish literary output in Slovakia in terms od literature of heroism, of the sublime, and thus provided the basis for the justified use of the texts of Nie-Boska komedia and Oda do młodości in the process of enhancing patriotic attitudes and behaviors, as well as in building the Slavonic self-consciousness.

Within the frame of comparative studies, the task for a comparatist-translatologist could be defined as the task of hermeneutic disclosure of the measure of the "other's" behavior in the encounter, interpreted as the interplay of meanings in the "lasting" system of reference, but also in terms of the text authority of the literature/work of literature accepted in the target system.

Limits of Arbitrariness. Text Analysis, Theory of Translation and Criteria of Textual Approaches (Defining New Epistemologic Frameworks of Translation Theory)

Laura Salmon Kovarski

The study introduces now epistemological frameworks of translation theory. This enables to determine methods and criteria for translation evaluation as well as the status of tex analysis and translating as philological activities and "trades." Unlimited arbitrariness in translation is overcome through epistemological shift to deontology.

The study and evaluation of translations is to be based on defining the specific nature of professionalism of the translator who is perceived as a manipulator of the text. This is based on the most universal definition of the term text and on thorough analysis of textual approaches employing definitions of text used in textual linguistics, semiotics, structuralism, postmodernims and hermeneutics.

Limits of interpretation and functioning of a text derived from hermeneutic understanding of the terms text, author, reader suggest that text is a an expression of language in certain interpretation (of the author, reader, translator). Hermeneutic approach to the text applied in text analysis and translation theory enables to define common features, analogies and differences in text analysis and translation.

Finally the author of the study specifies competences and tasks of translator and textual critic as well as their different approaches to the addressee of the text. The "trade" of the textual critic and the translator comprises the problems of semiosis, interpretation and perception. Limited freedom of interpretation and the limits to the free will of the translator are the limits of interpretation of different codes present in the language and in its cultural realisation during the act of communication.

Jauss’ Esthetics of Reception and Intercultural Centrisms (Interliterary Communication Defined as the Recipient Opening to Oneself)

Pavol Koprda

Jauss’ study Esthetique de la Reception et la Communication Litteraire understands Ďurišin’s theory of interliterary process as based on the esthetics of reception. Main term of esthetics of reception is the use of perceived and understood phenomena in order to have a look at the mechanisms through which we think, though which we are spoken. This has far reaching consequences for theory, criticism and historiography of interliterary communication, which is no longer governed by the structuralist esthetics. The article also explores Slovak rift from European poststructuralistic orientation, which took place first in 60's, in translation praxis, and later continued in 70's and 80's in literary studies. The article is also an introduction to the reasearch project Interliterary Centrisms as a Cathegory of World Literature.
