System and Typology of the Press

Andrej Tušer

Key words: system of the press - press - newspapers and magazines - periodicity - typology of the press - registration of the press

The author deals with the terms „system of the press" and „typology of the press" and brings to light their genesis. Via brief excursus to history, he refers to unbalanced development of the Slovak press in different historical periods, including Austria-Hungary till 1918, Czechoslovak Republic 1918-1938, Slovak state 1939-1945, and again, the Czechoslovak Republic in its various forms in the years 1945-1992. At the end, he describes the situation in the Slovak Republic since 1993.
The factful text gives comprehensive information on the state of the Slovak press in the last 100 years. At the same time, it offers a picture of the social and political developments during those times on the Slovak territory. Namely, there are direct relationships between the changes in the social system and the changes in the system and/or structure of the press.
During the last forty years, Slovakia has had a similar number of press titles: 232 in 1948, 377 in 1955, 288 in 1965, 316 in 1975, 314 in 1985 and 326 in 1989. A significant switch came after 1989 when a pluralistic social system was established. The number of titles rose from 492 in 1990 to nearly 1000 in 1997.
The author divides the press into two main groups: newspapers and magazines. Dealing with the UNESCO press categorisation, he presents a new typology of the press adequate to the present state of the Slovak press market. His new proposal of the press differentiation according to its content, distinguishes between the press for general public and the press for specific groups of readers. Both of them are further sectionalised into sub-groups.

Transformation of Study Program of the Department of Journalism (Faculty of Art, Comenius University)

Boris Droppa - Jozef Vatrál - Juraj Vojtek

Key words: Department of Journalism - past, present and future - reconstruction of study plans and programs - in the spirit of home traditions and in the context of world trends - possibilities and limits

The social changes after November 1989 brought about the necessity to establish a new approach to the education of journalists. This approach was applied both in reconstruction of the study plans and in content and methods of learning. Seemingly, the first task was more simple. However, it was only seemingly so because the curricula are the frame which should be filled by daily educational work. On the other hand, the schools of journalism in advanced countries (that means in the countries which do not undergo such social transformation as Slovakia does), change their study plans as well because requirements of the ongoing information society call for their revision. Lastly, proportionality of the different curricula (pursuance of interrelationship of individual courses, their proportionality, the question of obligation and eligibility, etc.) is such a multiplex problem that we can hardly speak about their ideal forms. Nevertheless, the curriculum is an abstraction which becomes reality only in the learning process. In this process, the personality of the teacher is the number one question. As we know, these personalities are not emerging in huge amounts.
All activities of the Department in this field consequently serve to educate the students in journalism in such a way so as to better prepare them for their work in the mass media of democratic Slovakia.
